Bone and clay shadow,
Escapes the memory cave –
Mortal, she is born.

Patrick Toohey

Janelle is a visual artist who lives and works in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.  She has a process-based practice which incorporates drawing, writing, sculpting, artist books, published books, site-specific installations, immersive installations, performative readings and socially engaged projects.

Through her work, Janelle gives meaning and presence to intangible threads of cultural memory and lived experience, exposing buried storylines and wilfully obscured narratives from deep within our cultural mythologising.

In 2016 Janelle’s explorations of death - of inner space, darkness and transformation, was furthered through her wilderness residency at Hastings Caves.  Janelle continues to work in response to the cave – most recently through the multifaceted project DARK CAVE.

Janelle exhibits regularly and nationally, has held several solo exhibitions including a site-specific installation at MONA, and she has been finalist in national art prizes; tidal.18 and The Blake Prize.  In 2017, Ruth Hadlow and Janelle set up Salon, a program of artist’s experimental and intimate performative readings, lectures and presentations. Janelle holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours (2005) and a Master of Fine Arts higher research degree from the University of Tasmania (2010).
